| Hi,
I was wondering how serious a copper deficiency is and what are the symptoms. I've read that pre-mature graying could mean that our bodies need the copper mineral. Does diruetics or laxatives also a cause for deficiency

| Hi Trish - Copper deficiencies are not very common. I tend to see more problems with copper toxicity than too little. A true deficiency of copper can result in anemia, changes in cholesterol levels, or cardiac arrhythmias. Zinc and copper compete with each other for absorption so if you have been taking supplements of zinc for a long period of time, it could possibly result in a copper deficiency. I am not familiar with laxatives or diuretics causing a copper deficiency - but I kno wthat chronic use of these products can be harmful and result in low levels of electrolytes and other minerals. Hope this helps. Natasha Turner, ND. |
