Most people work the large muscle groups first then progress to the small muscle groups. This is an effective method, as long as you occasionally rotate the order to train the small muscles first. This reversed order will improve motor control and teach you how to isolate certain muscle groups. For example, if you always train your chest muscles before your triceps muscles, you will never really appreciate the need to stay focused and concentrate on squeezing your chest
