Exercise for Kids and Teens

By Michael Carrera, MSc.

All of our exercise programs are based on the concept of Periodization – phase-based training that was popularized by Dr. Tudor Bompa. Dr. Bompa, Michael Carrera, MSc and Reggie Reyes have taken these concepts and simplified them for children and teenagers. All exercise programs for youth are based on Dr. Bompa’s international best-seller, Total Training for Young Champions. The programs use a step-by-step approach that provides a safe and efficient progression toward individual goals.

A six-year-old child cannot follow the same exercise program as a 13-year-old. Likewise, a 13-year-old should not follow the same exercise program as an 18-year-old. Our exercise programs are designed with the child’s age and physical maturity level in mind. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 should focus on developing a strong foundation of confidence, security, assertiveness and creativity and learn the skills of teamwork and problem solving. Activities that are challenging and, most importantly, fun will help develop positive self-esteem and a child’s ability to accomplish tasks. Bodyweight exercise programs are solely used for this age group.

The Athletic Development Program is designed for kids and teenagers between the ages of 6 and 18 who wish to exercise for improved fitness and health or for improved sport performance.

Kids and teenagers interested in improving their fitness and health will participate in the Youth Development Program (YDP), while those interested in improving sport performance will participate in the General Sports Program (GSP) or the Sport-Specific Program (SSP).

All programs, regardless of category, are geared toward developing the core areas of fitness; strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination and balance. All levels of fitness are welcome, as a wide range of exercise programs are available.
