Supplements for Reducing Stress (continued)

Vitamin C
Vitamin C levels are naturally highest in the adrenal glands. Research suggests that within 20 minutes of being under stress, vitamin C stores are depleted. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant, essential for a healthy immune system function and collagen formation in the skin, tendons and ligaments.

B vitamins
Endurance athletes and individuals who are fatigued or under stress should take extra B vitamins, especially vitamin B5. Vitamin B5 helps the body adapt to stress and supports adrenal gland function. Because they are water soluble B, vitamins are easily depleted with perspiration and with stress.

Essential fatty acids
About 60% of brain tissue is made up of fat cells. Optimal brain structure and function occurs when the fat cells are mainly made up of a component of omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Present findings suggest that omega-3 fatty

acids, especially DHA, may help in the treatment and prevention of depression, seasonal affective disorder and the sleep irregularities that tend to accompany these conditions.

Calcium
Calcium is a naturally calming mineral important for healthy muscle contraction and relaxation as well as for bone health.

Magnesium
Magnesium is a mineral involved in over 300 chemical reactions in the body. It tends to be used up rapidly under stress and deficiencies have been linked to chronic fatigue syndrome. Magnesium is also a natural muscle relaxant, making it a great choice to reduce muscle tension, lower blood pressure and improve sleep.
