Getting Fit for the Softball Season

By Reggie Reyes, BKin

When you think of sports in North America, popular ones such as football, baseball, ice hockey, golf and basketball come to mind. These sports have gained notoriety through extensive media coverage, fan support and athletes’ million-dollar salaries and endorsement deals. Parents around the world are driving their kids into these sports with the hope of one day having a millionaire professional athlete in the family. In a nutshell, these professional sports are evolving into businesses.

What about the love of the game?
On the other hand, there are many sports that have a high participation rate, even without the opportunity of one day making it to the big leagues. These sports seem to maintain the core values of healthy competition and fun. One such sport, softball, has continued to grow at an exponential rate even without the lure of fame and fortune. Each year, more than 40 million Americans participate in an estimated 23 million softball league games, defining softball as the nation's most popular sport.

This large participation rate has finally caught the attention of the media, much to the appreciation of avid softballers around the world. The Amateur Softball Association of America, the national governing body of softball in the United States has partnered with ESPN to feature the USA Softball Women’s National Team on their journey to the summer Olympics in Athens. Coverage of the team as they pursue their third Olympic gold medal in a row will begin in July 2004. Not only will this give the sport a well deserved boost, it will also solidify softball as a major player in the sports world. Who knows, maybe one day there will be high paying professional leagues across the country!

As softball continues to grow, more emphasis will be placed on player development, especially at the junior level. This encompasses the development of players’ skills, strategic coaching techniques and of course sport-specific fitness development. Other areas of the fitness and health industry, such as sports nutrition and supplementation companies, will also participate by creating sport-specific diets and supplementation plans and strategies. For a complete nutrition plan for softball, complete the Truestar Nutrition Profile and choose the athletic plan.

Start preparing now for softball season
Exercise programs geared to staying strong and fit for softball must include a proper combination of upper and lower body strength exercises along with aerobic and speed development exercises. We have attached a six-week exercise program that will prepare your muscles and joints for the physical stresses and challenges of softball. For an in-depth softball program, complete the Truestar Sport-Specific Profile.

Keep in mind that you should always warm up and cool down before and after all physical activity. A proper warm-up and cool-down includes some form of light aerobic activity that moves your entire body (e.g. jogging on the spot, skipping or jumping jacks) followed by stretches for the entire body. Since softball places a lot of stress on your shoulder and ankle joints; place extra emphasis on these areas during your warm-up and cool-down.

Consistent strength and flexibility training will enable you to fully enjoy any activity, regardless of your age and ability. Maintaining a healthy diet and vitamin and supplementation plan will help your body absorb the required nutrition for healthy muscles and joints. For a personal vitamin and supplementation plan, complete the Truestar Vitamins Profile.
